The American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a nut bearing native. They are monoecious (they have both male and female flowers on the same shrub.) A wind pollinated shrub (They do not produce nectar), it is recommended beginning with 3-5 shrubs for optimal nut production. Grows in sun to part shade. Needs about 8 hours of sun for optimal nut production. Nuts are harvested between July-September. At the 4th or 5th year they will produce nuts. Reaching a height of 10-15’ and approx 8-12’ wide. Great for erosion control and hedge making.
