Alder, Tag (Alnus incana) is also known as; Tag Alder, Hoary Alder, Hazel Alder, Swamp Alder, Grey Alder and Speckled Alder. This nitrogen fixing native perennial shrub is in the Birch Family (Betulaceae). A wetland indicator that grows up to 30 feet. Grows in moist soil in full sun to partial shade. Will grow into thickets, spread by rhizome. Often used in creek, stream and river restoration for bank stabilization and habitat creation.
Host plant to the Green Comma Butterfly and the Harvester Butterfly.
